Squid Game

Season 1 review

Squid Game is a highly successful and popular series on Netflix, In fact, it is Netflix's most watched show. This series can qualify as one of those creations that easily, and ironically, attain a cult-like status and indeed squid game madness followed everywhere around the world.

9/10 characters

When it comes to character development, this show maximised this aspect relative to the genre of death games and scores 9 out of 10.

The characters are excellent, especially considering that they are in brutal circumstances, which means you can mostly expect fight or flight types of reactions. Thus you do get somewhat more reactive type of character moments instead of something like long slow character development, but that is appropriate for the story setting. Yet, Gi-Hun as the main protagonist does go through a whole lot of character development, especially when season 2 is also considered.

9/10 storytelling

For quality and methods of storytelling, I give this series a 9 out of 10. This is a story about rich people committing crimes for entertainment and a main character caught up in this world. It is told in a relatively believable way with few moments that feel like plot holes or stretching the suspension of disbelief. In general the story events are very well communicated.

10/10 storylines

The story itself scores 10 out of 10.

This is an excellent story about the experiences of the main character as well as conveying some deeper themes and ideas.

10/10 ambience

The atmosphere and production value for this series scores a 10 out of 10. The ambience of squid game is highly recognisable.

There is an excellent use of visuals to communicate themes, ideas, atmosphere and story events. The show has a unique and recognisable look and feel to it.

10/10 themes and ideas

Although similar themes and ideas are present in many stories, for example hunger games, squid game approaches these same ideas in a fresh way by focusing on the journey and psychology of one character in particular. I give this series a 10 out of 10 for themes and ideas.

This series, season 1, scores 96%.
